Exploit the Picture

Objective: To practice speaking; to practice language taught previously

Steps:
  1. Have the students open their books on the page with the Conversation. Ask them to cover the dialog with their hands, a slip of paper, or a "don't look" card.
  2. Pre-teach any key vocabulary that the students might need for this activity. Before assigning the task, set the scene by asking questions like:
    • "Where are they?"
    • "What are they doing?"
    • "How do they feel?"
  3. Have students work in pairs and tell a story about the picture, using their imagination.
Example: The following example is for New Interchange 1, Unit 15: "I'm Going to See a Musical." The picture appears on p. 94 of the Student's Book.

STORY TOLD BY A STUDENT:
  • This is my father. His name is Mr. Kale, and he is a manager.
  • He is in his office.
  • It is August 10, and it's my mother's birthday today.
  • My father forgot her birthday.
  • He wants to take her out to dinner. So he is calling a restaurant to book a table.
