Mumbo Jumbo
Objective: To help students feel at ease with unfamiliar vocabulary; to help students develop the skill of guessing meaning from context
Steps:
- Copy a short passage from a Reading exercise on the board. Change some of the more challenging words into mumbo jumbo (unreal language).
- Explain to your students that the aim is to guess what kind of word each mumbo jumbo word might be. For example, is it a verb? A noun? What might it mean? Encourage the students to use the context, position in the sentence, pictures in the book, and other clues to guess the meaning of the word.
Example: The following example is for New Interchange 1, Unit 7: "We Had a Great Time!" The Reading exercise appears on p. 45 of the Student's Book.
