Mumbo Jumbo

Objective: To help students feel at ease with unfamiliar vocabulary; to help students develop the skill of guessing meaning from context

Steps:

  1. Copy a short passage from a Reading exercise on the board. Change some of the more challenging words into mumbo jumbo (unreal language).
  2. Explain to your students that the aim is to guess what kind of word each mumbo jumbo word might be. For example, is it a verb? A noun? What might it mean? Encourage the students to use the context, position in the sentence, pictures in the book, and other clues to guess the meaning of the word.

Example: The following example is for New  Interchange 1, Unit 7: "We Had a Great Time!" The Reading exercise appears on p. 45 of the Student's Book.
