Vocabulary Activity

Objectives: To help students with Snapshot exercises that contain a lot of new vocabulary; to foster self-awareness

Steps:

  1. Draw a chart with three columns on the board for students to copy on a piece of paper. The column headings should be "I know," "I'm not sure," and "I don't know." Then write the new vocabulary from the Snapshot below the chart.
  2. Books closed. Students decide which words they know, which they aren't sure about, and which they don't know. They should put the words in the appropriate columns.
  3. Optional: Students talk about the words they know with one another.
  4. Books open. To find the meaning of the words they don't know or aren't sure about, students use the pictures in the Snapshot or discuss the vocabulary in the context of the Snapshot.

Example: The following example is for New Interchange 1, Unit 9: "What Does He Look Like?" The Snapshot exercise appears on p. 57 of the Student's Book.

Snapshot:

On the Board:

Variation: Add one more column entitled "I would like to know." In this column students note words that they want to learn in English by writing the words in their language, by writing a definition in English, or by drawing a picture.
