Cheap fun
This activity is designed to be taught with Exercise 2, "Role Play: Missing person."
Time: 1015 minutes. This activity practices describing events and activities in a city.
- Explain the task: This is a brainstorming activity. Students have to think of interesting and fun things they can do in their city for a fixed amount of money (e.g., for less than $5 each or for the equivalent amount in your currency). The group with the longest list is the winner.
- Model the kinds of suggestions students can make, like this:
Teacher: I think we should take the train to . . . Temple. We can look at the carvings on the temple walls. Then we can have lunch at the cafe outside. It costs two dollars for the train fare, one dollar for the temple entrance fee, and two dollars for a big bowl of noodles for lunch. That's only five dollars!
- Students form groups and choose a group secretary to take notes. Then they do the task. Set a time limit of about six minutes. Listen in and give help as needed.
- Group secretaries read their suggestions to the class. Which group was the winner?
