Quick fixes

This activity is designed to be taught with Exercise 2, "Listening: Tenant complaints."

Time: 10–15 minutes. This activity practices discussing problems and suggesting solutions.
  • Ask the class to imagine that they are consultants whose job is to think of quick solutions to problems. They have to discuss each of the following problems and come up with the three best solutions for each.
  • Divide the class into groups, each with a group secretary. Photocopy the situations or write them on the board:
    1. The local city council has asked you to suggest ways of improving people's driving habits.
    2. A department store has asked you to think of ways to improve the performance of its salespeople.
    3. A neighborhood committee has asked for advice on improving their area.
  • Compare suggestions around the class.
