If you could have lived in another time

This activity is designed to be taught with Exercise 4, "Pros and Cons."

Time: 15–20 minutes. This activity practices using past modals to hypothesize about living in a different time.
  • Explain the activity: Students work in pairs to discuss which time (e.g., a century, a decade) they would have liked to live in. Go over the following questions and write them on the board; then elicit additional questions from the class and add them:

    1. Which century or decade would you have liked to live in?
    2. In what country would you have chosen to be born?
    3. What kinds of things would you have done as a child?
    4. What types of clothes would you have worn?
    5. What would your family have been like?

  • Students talk about the questions. Set a time limit of ten minutes. Go around and give help as needed.
  • Ask for volunteers to report to the class what their partners said about living in another time.
