A hundred years later

This activity is designed to be taught with Exercise 10, "What Do You Think?"

Time: 15–20 minutes. This activity practices describing future events.
  • Ask students to work in pairs and to imagine that they have fallen asleep and awakened 100 years later. Write this question on the board for pairs to think about:

How will life be different 100 years from now?

  • Now give students ten minutes to think of ten differences. Walk around and give help as needed.
  • As a whole class activity, students share and compare their ideas.

Time capsule

This activity is designed to be taught with Exercise 13, "Reading: The global village."

Time: 15–20 minutes. This exercise practices describing the future and giving reasons.
  • Explain the activity title: A time capsule is a container filled with typical objects of the present time and then buried so that it can be dug up and studied in the future.
  • Divide the class into groups and ask each to choose a secretary. Explain that each group has to choose ten common, modern-day items to put into a time capsule. They should also think of a reason for choosing each item.
  • Set a time limit of ten minutes for the task. Go around and give help as needed.
  • Now groups take turns reporting to the class on their time capsules. Encourage them to give reasons for their choices. For a model, read the following example aloud: The first thing in our time capsule is a copy of the Sunday newspaper. This will show the kinds of printed information that people read each week.
