Exploiting the Picture
Objective: To practice speaking; to practice language taught previously.
Steps:
- Have the students open their books on the page with the Conversation. Ask them to cover the dialog with their hands, a slip of paper, or a "don't look" card.
- Pre-teach any key vocabulary that the students might need for this activity. Set the scene by asking, "Where are they?," "What are they doing?," "How do they feel?," and so on, before assigning the task.
- Have students work in pairs and tell a story about the picture, using their imagination.
Example: The following example is for New Interchange 1, Unit 15: "I'm Going to See a Musical." The picture appears on p. 94 of the Student's Book.
STORY TOLD BY A STUDENT:
- This is my father. His name is Mr. Kale, and he is a manager.
- He is in his office.
- It is August 10, and it's my mother's birthday today.
- My father forgot her birthday.
- He wants to take her out to dinner. So he is calling a restaurant to book a table.
